Pouches - a simple loop of fabric worn on one shoulder. Suitable from birth to toddler they are simple to use, an excellent 'pop and go' option and usually the cheapest option. They are usually sized to the wearer meaning parents of different sizes are not able to share the same sling, but some are adjustable and fit a range of sizes.

Ring Slings - another one shoulder sling, ring slings have the advantage of being adjustable enabling parents of different sizes to share the same sling. Can be used from birth and an excellent option for a newly walking toddler who regularly wants to be carried. One of the most suitable styles for breastfeeding. More information about Ring Slings

Stretchy Wraparounds - a long piece of stretchy fabric (usually between 5 and 6 metres) with no buckles or clips making them very adjustable and a 'one size fits most' sling. An excellent sling for a newborn and suitable for at least 6-9 months, maybe up to 18 months, depending on the size of your baby. Very hands-free and suitable for breastfeeding.

Woven Wraparounds - made of a woven material which is supportive enough to carry heavy toddlers as well as a newborn. The thickness of the material varies between brands, some are lighter and cooler in warmer weather while thicker wraps tend to be more comfortable with heavy babies and toddlers. Buckle Carriers - the most similar style to the carriers found on the high street, these are based on the traditional carriers of Asia. Some are suitable from birth, others from between 4 and 6 months and a good option for heavier babies and toddlers. Can be worn on front and back and sometimes hip. Tie-On Soft Carriers - a more traditional design based on the Chinese Mei Tai with no buckles, these can carry a newborn and a toddler and designed for front and back carries. Hip Carriers - designed to mimic the way you naturally carry an older baby on your hip, these carriers distribute the weight through your waist and shoulder and allow you to keep your spine straight which can reduce the risk of back and pelvis problems.
