Christmas Competition

We think we are still the victim of recent changes to Facebook and people are not seeing our updates (if you are a fan and haven't been seeing our status updates, go onto our page and click like or comment on a few statuses which should allow us to show in the future) as it seems a little odd that only 6 people wanted to win three slings. However, with only 6 entries, those that did enter had pretty good odds of winning a great prize. We thought randomly picking one entry was the fairest way to do it.

First the seven year old was put to work writing the names on little bits of paper........

All Set For Winter

So far this winter there have not been the ridiculously low temperatures and snow that we had had by this time last year (although if you're in Scotland or the North you may have had some of the white stuff over the last couple of days) but a cold snap is bound to be just around the corner. Staying snug and protecting your precious cargo against the elements is something that concerns many parents while using a sling or carrier in the winter, and to help you stay warm we've increased our range of babywearing clothing with some fabulous products from Mamalila. While obviously being incredibly useful and practical accessories for babywearing, the real beauty of these babywearing coats is they can be used for many years meaning they are worth every penny!

We are now stocking a waterproof babywearing jacket, well actually we have two! The All Weather Winter Jacket is made from a waterproof and windproof fabric that keeps water out while remaining breathable and stopping you getting hot and sweaty which can be an issue with some waterproof coats. It is lined with fleece so also keeps you warm. The All Weather Summer Jacket is made from the same waterproof material but is not lined making it a great option for warmer weather and for people who prefer to layer a lightweight waterproof over thicker winter clothing. Both jackets are supplied with the infant insert which zips into the back or the front and is compatible with most slings and carriers. The infant insert and the main jacket have hoods to keep you and your baby dry. The jackets also convert into a Maternity jacket with the addition of the pregnancy insert (available separately) and without an insert they become a stylish normal jacket making them great value for money. Both jackets are available in three colours - Winter in Black, Red and Teal, and Summer in Grey, Red and Turquoise.

Also new to Big Mama Slings is the Hooded Babywearing Coat. This gorgeously stylish wool coat is similar to the Mamajacket but with the added features of a high buttoning collar and a hood making it really cosy in the cold weather. The jacket comes with the infant insert as standard which, as with all babywearing coats, can be used on the front or the back. The insert has a vertical opening which means the coat works no matter how high or low your baby is sitting in the carrier. Boba Carrier in 'Tweet'

New to the Big Mama Slings range are two products from Boba. The Boba Wrap (formerly known as Sleepy Wrap) is a stretchy wrap style sling - easy to use, the perfect carrier for newborns and is guaranteed to keep your baby nice and snug (and you hands-free) in the coming months. Available in a range of six plain colours that will suit both mums and dads. The Boba 3G Classic Baby Carrier (right) is a buckle carrier which, unlike most buckle carriers, is suitable from birth (7lbs) without the need for a separate insert or accessory. Fabulously supportive, the Boba 3G has the same basic design of the original Boba Carrier that is so popular, but with a number of new features, including innovative foot straps to support the legs of older children, and is available in both patterned and plain designs.

Been a bit quiet on the blogging front recently so apologies for that. There have been some lovely new things arriving at Big Mama HQ recently with more on the way....

Firstly we have the Ergo Baby Carrier (right) back in stock. This was the first two shouldered carrier I owned when my now 6 year old was about 7 months old and it was used a lot so it was great to be able to give the new design a try. My only sling "baby" is two and a half but the padding and supportive waistbelt meant it was incredibly comfortable for a back carry.The new design of sleep hood is brilliant and seems to support their head really well and the strong snaps on the shoulder straps it fastens to make it feel secure and not likely to pop off if they wriggle in their sleep. Available in three practical colours with accessories coming soon.

Also in our Buckle Carriers section is the Pikkolo Baby Carrier from Catbird Baby (left). We've been getting lots of enquiries about when this will be back and now it is! With it's Mei-Tai like design but quick and secure buckle fastenings, this is a very popular choice, especially because it is one of the few carriers on the market which offers a proper ergonomic forward facing position. It comes with a detachable sleep hood and the padded shoulder straps are incredibly comfortable even with a toddler.

Finally we have the MaM Deluxe Babywearing Cover back just as the weather is getting colder. This works with all slings and carriers and covers your baby or child with a warm and waterproof layer. This also comes with a separate hood which fastens under the chin and has cute ears on the top (don't make the mistake I did and get photographed trying it on, 'nuff said!). Woven Wraps - what length?

The issue of wrap length is something that we get a lot of emails about and it does make the whole choosing dilemma that much harder. There are a couple of factors which you need to take into consideration when deciding which length to go for and, although there are no hard and fast rules, this can help you make the right choice.

The size of the people who will be using the wrap (not the size of your child)
The carrying positions you want to achieve
How proficient you are with a woven wraparound sling

The majority of people who buy a wrap are doing so because they can achieve a very comfortable, secure and adjustable two-shoulder front and back carry (usually the FWCC/BWCC but also the FCC). If you are one of these people the decision is relatively easy. For people of "average" size, a wrap of 4.6/4.7m tends to do the job. It is difficult to precisely define what average sized is, as it is a combination of size and height, but women up to size 14/16 and men who are up to 6' and 44" chest can normally use this size. Women who are very petite (size 8 or under) will probably find they can achieve a FWCC with a 4.2m length and women larger than a size 16 may be better with a 5.2m. This isn't set in stone as everyone is different but should give you a guide. If you want a wrap for more than one person to use it is best to size the wrap to the person who is going to be using it most often. If the other user finds the wrap is a little long they can wrap it around the waist one more time or tuck the ends in, and if the other user is larger there will be another carrying position they can use which uses slightly less fabric.

The best way to be sure is to try a wrap on before you buy - either borrow one from a friend, hire one or go to a local Sling Meet. If none of these are possible, or you just want to talk through the sizing issue, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Sling Safety

There has been recent press focus on the safety of baby slings, following a publication by the US Government Agency CPSC regarding the safety of 'bag-style' slings and incorrect positioning, which can be dangerous to small infants. We will shortly be releasing a safety statement ourselves in collaboration with other sling retailers and manufacturers, but in the meantime please be assured that none of the slings sold by Big Mama Slings are of the potentially dangerous 'bag-style'. Choosing books on any parenting topic is pretty confusing - not only are there hundreds but the advice in them is often quite different and sometimes even totally contradictory. A good book on breastfeeding is a great resource so here are 5 that get the thumbs up from us.

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding - this book from La Leche League, the international breastfeeding organisation, was first published in 1958 and is now in its 7th revised edition. It is full of accurate, up-to-date information on all aspects of breastfeeding and other related issues such as weaning, starting solids, sleep and loving guidance.

The Food of Love: your formula for successful breastfeeding - written by Kate Evans, a mother, author, cartoonist and active environmental campaigner. This light-hearted, witty book contains all the latest research but is easy to read and is illustrated with beautiful cartoons.

With the world going blogging crazy there are blogs on just about every topic imaginable, including breastfeeding. A great way to both keep up-to-date with issues that are relevant to breastfeeding and read the opinions and views of breastfeeding bloggers (or should that be blogging breastfeeders??) who are vocal about supporting the breastfeeding cause. Well-written, often inspirational and sometimes downright funny - here are some we really like.

One Of Those Women - written by Morgan Gallagher, chairperson of 'Nursing Matters', a non-profit making, voluntary organisation that advocates for breastfeeding babies. The Lactivist - written by 'a mainstream WAHM turned slightly crunchy by my two little munchins' and is the companion to The Lactivist Store. It is 'aimed at supporting nursing moms by promoting issues like extended breastfeeding, breastfeeding in public and human milk bank donation. The Lactivist is a little on the irreverent side, but we aim to educate through humor and we hope that you'll laugh with us'.

There are lots of websites about breastfeeding, some better than others. Here are 5 we think are worth a look.

Kellymom - full of evidence-based information on breastfeeding and parenting. It is run by Kelly Bonyata, a member of the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). A great site which will answer most breastfeeding questions.

La Leche League - the website of LLLGB, the UK branch of La Leche League International (LLLI), the Breastfeeding Organisation which 'helps mothers to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother.' There are links to LLLI's vast online library of breastfeeding and parenting information and also to the list of LLL groups throughout the country and contact numbers for local LLL leaders and the national helpline for breastfeeding help and support.

Dr Jack Newman - website of the Canadian Paediatrician with information on a wide range of breastfeeding topics as both printable information sheets and video clips - great for those issues when you really need to 'see'.

The ability to breastfeed on-the-go and be hands-free while doing it is very useful, especially if you have older children and there are times when you have to leave the house to do the school run or get to an appointment and your baby wants to be fed. It is certainly possible to breastfeed in any sling although some will be easier than others depending on the age of the baby. Breastfeeding in a sling or carrier is a skill that some people find easy to master and others take a while to get the hang of. There are almost an infinite number of ways to breastfeed in a sling as sling users adapt instructions to suit them and their baby, some tweaks are very minor others quite major. Because of this there are lots of photo and video instructions on the web and it would therefore be impossible to list them all but here are a few of the ones we think are comprehensive and easy to follow.

These videos and photo instructions make it look very easy but don't worry if you don't get the hang of it first time, it can take a bit of practice, but is well worth the time. Sections with links to instructions are in italics.

**When attempting to breastfeed a young baby in a sling be aware at all times of your babies breathing and ensure that his nose is clear to allow him to breathe comfortably. Once a baby has finished feeding adjust your sling so that they are positioned correctly and there is no danger of them rolling in towards your body.**

Newborn/Very Young Baby
Arguably the easiest slings in which to breastfeed a small baby are either Ring Slings or Wraparounds although there are bound to be plenty of people who breastfeed in pouches or soft carriers from birth.

With a Ring Sling you can just use a modified version of the basic cradle carry. Everyone develops their own method but the advice (at least while learning) is normally to latch your baby on first then tighten the sling around them so they are supported. You may find you have to support your babies head with your arm.

We like this video from Darien, creator of the Zolowear Ring Sling, which shows the cradle carry with a newborn and how it could be used to breastfeed. Another fantastic video is this one which shows how to move a newborn from an upright tummy-to-tummy hold into the breastfeeding position - especially useful for babies who suffer with colic or reflux and are happier being carried upright.

The principle of feeding in a Pouch is exactly the same as in a ring sling except, as pouches are not as adjustable as a ring sling it is important to make sure your pouch fits very well so as to support your baby in the right position to breastfeed.

Wraparound slings are the most versatile of all and as a result the sling can be tweaked so that you and your baby are in a comfortable postition to feed on the go. There are two types of wraparound slings - stretchy wraps, which are usually tied before putting the baby in, and woven wraps. It is possible to breastfeed in both types although different people may have a preference for one or the other. With a young baby most people breastfeed in the cradle position which uses the normal tying method for a stretchy wrap and either the Front Wrap Cross Carry (FWCC) or the Front Cross Carry (FCC) in a long woven wrap. The cradle carry in a short wrap (Rebozo) is a one shouldered carry so is more like a cradle carry in a ring sling.

We have found two good videos (although there are lots more) showing breastfeeding positions for a newborn in a stretchy wrap - one which uses the simple FCC and where the wrap is put on first, and one where the wrap is tied around the baby in the FWCC.

For a woven wrap two of the best videos we have seen show a newborn in the FWCC and also a slightly older baby in the FCC. We can't leave out these great photo instructions from Calin Bleu showing step-by-step how to breastfeed in a long wrap.

Breastfeeding a young baby in a soft carrier is possible in an upright position just as it is for an older baby. Sometimes all that is necessary is to loosen the sling to jiggle your baby down to the right level then re-tighten the sling when they have finished feeding.

Kelley, designer of the Kozy Mei Tai, shows it is possible to feed both a newborn and an older baby.

Older baby
Depending on how big your baby or toddler is, it may be possible to simple modify the young baby positions. A big baby or toddler will possibly be too long to be fed in the cradle position so an upright position may be easier. A Ring Sling could be used in a hip carry or tummy to tummy and loosened to lower your child into position. A wrap tied in a standard FWCC or FCC can also be loosened by un-tying the knot, gently jiggling your child down to the right position and re-tying. Once they have finished feeding a bounce and a tug on the wrap can tighten the sling up again. A Mei Tai or Buckle Carrier can also be loosened in the same way. Hip Carriers also allow breastfeeding with older babies.

A petite older baby may still be able to breastfeed in the cradle position in a Ring Sling, as shown here by Darien or for a bigger baby a hip carry may be more suitable.

When a customer emails us asking for help narrowing the bewildering range of slings it really helps us advise them if they give us a little bit of information, both about the person(s) who will be using the sling, as well as how the sling will be used. Most people have a list of things they want from a sling and not everyone is going to find one sling that ticks all the boxes so it may be a case of prioritising what is most important. Everyone's needs are different so obviously the mythical beast that is "the right sling" (and we believe there is at least one sling out there for everyone) will be different for different people but quite frequently our response is that the best sling would be a two shoulder sling - either a Soft Carrier or a Wraparound. These are some of the things that are mentioned in the emails we receive that mean we may recommend a two shoulder sling:

one of the wearers has problems with their back, pelvis or shoulders and wants a carrier that distributes the weight well
carrier needed for long walks especially in pushchair unfriendly places (often dog owners)
a sling or carrier will be the main method of transporting the baby - someone on a budget, who does not drive and relies on public transport (London Underground is mentioned a lot!), lives in an upstairs flat or leans towards Attachment Parenting,
need a sling for times that require two hands free and/or lots of bending so baby is well supported - housework/jobs around the house, pushing a buggy/wheelchair, even mucking out horses are some of the things mentioned by our customers
older or heavier baby/child who isn't yet walking, who won't go in a buggy when they're tired, instead preferring to be carried, or has a physical disability
baby suffers from reflux/colic or just likes being upright
sling suitable from birth to toddler

That's not to say that someone might also have a specific need or priority that means we might suggest something else instead of or as well as a two shoulder sling. If you think that might be you and want to talk through your situation then please contact us.

So if you think a soft carrier or wraparound sling would be the best for you how do you know which one? Well for a start, the two types are pretty different and often someone finds that one type appeals to them more than the other. This is always a good place to start, after all there is no point in buying a sling that you think might work for you if you don't like it. Odds are it will sit in a cupboard or drawer and not get used and we don't like to see slings being unloved! So if you really don't like the look of one type and don't think you will use it then it's probably best to rule it out. Wraparound Slings - Stretchy or Woven?

Wraparound slings are the slings that are most likely to scare people! Admittedly they can be pretty daunting, especially if you are new to the world of babywearing - all that fabric and the different tying methods makes them seem very complicated and it is true that wraps have the steepest learning curve. However, using a long piece of fabric to carry your baby has lots of advantages and wrapping doesn't take that long to get the hang of if you have a bit of patience and are prepared to spend some time practising. As any die-hard wrapper will tell you, the rewards make it well worth it. Read on for information to help you decide which one is right for you.

Advantages of Wraparound Slings

Extremely comfortable - wraps hug your child close to you which means their weight is supported by your whole torso. Even a heavy baby can feel weightless in a correctly tied wrap. This also makes them very good for people with back problems.
Ultimate in adjustability - with no restrictions on tightening the wrap and no padding to get in the way the sling can be tweaked to suit the individual wearer.
Versatility - a wrap is arguably the most versatile of all slings, suitable from birth onwards and allowing both one shoulder and two shoulder carries on your front, back and hip.
Great for breastfeeding - due to a wrap being so adjustable they are possibly the easiest sling to breastfeed in and mean you can do it hands-free and on the go!

As with Soft Carriers there are two types of wrap - Stretchy and Woven. Although they are basically used the same way they are quite different so here's some info about each type.

Stretchy Wraparounds, such as the Moby or Tricot-Slen, are made of a stretchy material (funnily enough!) such as jersey cotton or fleece. They are gorgeously soft and a wonderful sling for a newborn, suitable for really tiny or premature babies and great for kangaroo care. You tie the sling before you put the baby in which means you can effectively leave the sling on all day and just pop the baby in and out when necessary. From day one you can carry a baby upright or in the cradle position and the latter is suitable for breastfeeding, the sling is tied the same way for both positions. It looks confusing but the tying method is pretty straightforward and once you get the hang of it will be able to tie it in under a minute. Stretchy wraps usually come in one length (over 5 metres) and are a one size fits most sling making them a great choice for parents who wish to share one sling. The designs are mostly quite plain making them very dad friendly.

The only real disadvantage of a Stretchy Wraparound is that the stretch of the fabric means they are not always supportive enough to carry heavier babies so do have a limited lifespan. When a baby reaches a certain weight some people find that the material can start to sag and this can pull on your back and shoulders. When this happens is impossible to predict, it will be at different weights for different people and can certainly be minimised by ensuring that the sling is tied tight enough and the fabric is well spread. Most people find they can use a stretchy wrap for at least 6-9 months (unless you have a very chunky baby), some a lot longer than that. Another issue is that as a baby grows and inevitably gets longer front carries become more difficult. In order to keep a baby in the correct position (with their bum at or above waist level) so it is comfortable for the wearer a tall baby will have their head in your face! Also carrying a heavy baby on your front does become less comfortable and will make your back ache more, for this reason most babywearers do start to use back carries at some point. While it is possible to do back carries in some stretchy wraps it is something we urge great caution over. Because the fabric is stretchy and also not as wide as a woven wrap there is a danger of a baby leaning back and not being properly supported, for this reason we would certainly not advise a back carry be attempted by anyone who is a novice.

Woven Wraparounds are the ultimate in versatility making possible a variety of front, back and hip carries from birth to toddler. As a result they do have the steepest learning curve of all slings but for the sling user who is prepared to take a bit of time to practice they do not take long to get the hang of, they all come with very good instructions and there are plenty more to be found on the net. The fabric has a special weave with just enough diagonal give to mould around you and your baby and making the wrap super supportive, even for heavy toddlers. Unlike their stretchy siblings, woven wraps come in different lengths. The shortest are usually around the 2.5 metre mark and the longest around 6 metres. The length you need depends on the carrying positions you want to be able to achieve as well as the size of the wearer. A short wrap will only allow you to do a few positions and some of the most comfortable front and back carries require a longer length of fabric. We recommend that for most families a wrap of around 4.6 metres will give you the most versatility although if either parent is very tall or broad a wrap over 5 metres may be better. Do contact us if you are unsure which length is right for you. Another difference between the different brands of woven wrap is the thickness of the fabric. Big Mama stocks a variety from the light and airy Calin Bleu gauze which is perfect for summer to the much thicker Didymos and Storchenwiege which are very supportive even for toddlers.

Slinging in the Rain!

Well not just rain, all the grotty weather that the British climate throws at us. We get emails from customers asking how best to sling during the winter months whilst still keeping you and baby warm and dry.

Sling under or over a coat? The short answer is either but there are things to consider. If your baby is wrapped up for the cold and the sling or carrier is on top of your coat you can bet your little cherub will fall asleep which leaves you with a problem if you then go indoors. In order to get your coat off and to remove their warm clothing to prevent them overheating you have to wake them up.... I'm sure not all babies turn into Grumpy from the land of Grump when they are woken from a sling sleep but mine does! If they are under your coat with just a hat on you can remove them and let your baby keep sleeping.

What are the clothing options? The most obvious option is a Babywearing Coat such as the divine Mam ajacket (see photo above). These have an extra panel which zips into the front or back and provides extra room for your baby and a hole for their head. The coat can be worn without the panel and is a rather yummy fitted coat. You can also buy covers which go over a sling. The MaM Babywearing Cover (right) provides a wind and rain proof layer over your baby and the carrier. If you want a cheaper option you can use a slightly-too-large fleece jacket or even a big cardi (the long maternity styles with a belt work well) which you can do up around you and your baby.

To Buckle Or Knot To Buckle...

...that is the question! There are two types of Soft Carrier - structured Buckle Carriers and the more traditional Tie-On. Both are based on the design of traditional Asian carriers such as the Chinese Mei Tai (even though many Tie-On carriers retain the name they have been westernised) and are very comfortable, distributing the weight of even heavy toddlers well. Basically both types are a square (ish) panel with straps that come off the corners - the bottom two tie/fasten around your waist and the others go over your shoulders. They can be used on your front and back and, in some cases, hip as well.

Why choose a Soft Carrier? There are a few situations in which we would recommend a soft carrier, either alone or alongside another type:

one of the wearers has back/shoulder problems - soft carriers distribute the weight well and don't place unnecessary strain on your back or shoulders
for long periods of use such as a long walk and/or carrying a heavier baby/child
for use in the house/while doing chores - these support the baby well and leave the wearer hands free
a quick to put on carrier - buckle carriers tend to be marginally quicker than a tie-on but both are pretty quick to put on and certainly quicker than a wraparound

Okay so a Soft Carrier seems like a good idea, but which type? Quite often people find they can comfortable use at least one carrier of each type but there are differences which might make one type more suitable than the other. The obvious difference is the way they are fastened but there are others that might be relevant.

The age/weight range of the carrier is the most important aspect to get right to ensure the safety of your baby as well as the comfort of the wearer. There have been a few new buckle carriers on the market in the last few years such as the Pikkolo and Manduca which means there are now buckle carriers which are suitable from birth without the need for a separate insert. These carriers enable a facing in with legs out position from day one. All Mei Tais are suitable from birth although most do not allow a legs out position straight away, instead a baby is carried with the legs "frogged" inside the carrier until they are big enough to have their legs out (usually between 4-7 months). As an inbetween stage some babies who want a bit more freedom can have one leg in and one leg out. Both types can comfortably carry a child up to minimum 30lbs, some much more than this (for exact weight limits see the individual product page or refer to our Comparison Chart)

The design of a buckle carrier is often quite different as they have a padded waist belt which offers additional support for the wearers lower back. In contrast to this a Mei Tai is usually worn 'apron style' (short straps tie around the waist and the body hangs down like an apron then the body of the carrier is folded up to form a seat) and has no padding. As with all slings this tends to be a very personal choice - some sling users prefer using a carrier with a waist belt, others prefer one without. Both types have varying amounts of padding in the shoulder straps. There are also carriers such as a Connecta (right) which, although fall in the category of a buckle carrier (for obvious reasons!), are technically a hybrid known as a Buckle Tai. They have no padded waist belt and are worn apron style but do fasten with buckles. Buckle carriers used to be pretty plain in design but there are now carriers which come in prettier fabric options. Mei Tai have a pretty fabric on the body usually but have the added bonus of being reversible to a plain side which is good for dads! It may come down to simply aesthetics rather than comfort why someone chooses one style over another and every style will have its fans.

The size of the wearer can have an impact on which carrier is most suitable. Buckle carriers tend to be much more personal in terms of the way they fit and some people find that certain buckle carriers don't fit them as well as others, particularly people who are bigger or smaller than average. Women who are petite/short and/or have narrow shoulders or people who are very tall and/or very broad sometimes have problems with some types of buckle carriers. The padding on the straps can restrict how far a carrier can be tightened which means it can be too loose for small people. Larger wearers may find that straps dig in under the arms and are not as comfortable. Because this depends on several different factors there are no hard and fast rules and it is a case of try it and see (good job Big Mama has such a good returns policy so you can swap it if you find it doesn't suit you!). Tie-on carriers can be tightened as much as necessary, petite wearers may find straps slip off their shoulders in a back carry although there are tips to prevent this.

Pouch or Ring Sling?

For parents who need a quick 'pop and go' option, have a child that is in the up-down-up-down stage, like the idea of a one shoulder sling, or want a sling for hip carries (or none/all of the above!) a Pouch or a Ring Sling is a good option. Some people email us and say they prefer the look or design of one style over the other but for someone who is unsure which would suit their needs the best, there are a few things to consider.

How many people will be using the sling? If more than one person will be using the sling you will probably find you will need a pouch each as these need to be sized correctly to the wearer. Unless two people are of vastly different size you will more than likely both be able to use the same Ring Sling. If you will be the only person using the sling and you want something that needs no adjusting then a Pouch may be simpler.

Does your baby prefer being upright? The way a baby is carried is something that can be an issue, especially if a baby suffers with colic or reflux. Many babies will have a preference for a certain position and in our experience an intolerance to a cradle/lying down position, even if only temporarily, is quite common. A Ring Sling gives you the option of an upright carry from day one whereas this is not usually possible in a Pouch until the baby has good head control and can be carried in the Buddha position.

Do you want something that is quick to learn to use? Pouches are arguably the simplest slings to get to grips with whereas there is a small learning curve with a Ring Sling while you get used to adjusting the sling and threading the fabric through the rings. Pouches are also the most compact and often the cheapest option.

Do you want a sling you can breastfeed in? Ring Slings are generally much easier to breastfeed in as it is possible to adjust the sling so that it holds the baby in exactly the right position. This is more difficult with a pouch as the sizing has to be just right or it will not support the baby in the correct position to stay latched on.

Scootababy have just released a new and updated version of their popular hip carrier, and we thought this would be a great time to focus on the brains behind this ingenious sling.

Audra Meng started the business, 'We officially launched in August 2007... however, the design and development of the Scootababy carrier had been in the works for a full year prior to that. I actually first started thinking about a fast and comfortable hip carrier when my first son was a baby (he is now almost five!). After my second son was born, I decided I had to figure out a way to make exactly what I wanted... and so Scootababy was born.'

Audra says 'The best thing about being in the sling business is helping a mom try on the carrier, and watching her eyes light up when she realizes how comfortable and easy it can be to babywear! Making things just a little bit easier, and helping parents get on with their day gives me great satisfaction. Behind the Business - Calin Bleu

Calin Bleu is a family-run business based in Scotland, manufacturing wraparound baby carriers. Anne Dhir is the brains and creative energy that has driven Calin Bleu from small eBay-based beginnings to one of the top UK sling manufacturers in less than 4 years.

Anne started Calin Bleu after the birth of her first child. She wanted to carry her child in a wraparound sling and started making her own wraps; positive comments from friends and family encouraged her to make her slings to sell. She has now refined her range to a lightwight yet supportive gauze and a super-comfortable microfleece, available in a range of fashionable colours. Anne is particularly attached to the microfleece wrap ' They are so expensive to make that we hardly make any money on them. But I HAD to have one for our little boy who was born last August. In order to have one I had to order hundreds so here we go! They are so soft and snug and light. On a more practical level, I also love them because they are easy to use and can help parents discover the joy of wrapping.'

Although business has grown since launching her website in 2005, Anne has still managed to launch Sling Meet in conjunction with Stephanie French, Zolowear's UK sales rep. The site now has many groups who meet regularly throughout the UK and Ireland, and as Anne says 'I feel a bit of a sling matchmaker, helping parents find other parents who use slings in their area. Anne's passion for helping parents be attached to their babies is clear when you ask her what the best bit of her business is: 'The most precious moments of running a sling business is helping a mum use her baby carrier, you can see her face light up, it's so comfortable, I can't feel her weight, dancing around, look I've got my hands free! Anne's top sling tips:

Take your time. You didn't learn to bike in one-go, it's the same thing with slings.
High and Tight. Most parents who find their sling uncomfortable are wearing it way too loose. Remember, baby is at kiss level (bend your head to kiss their forehead) and wear it tight. If it sags after a while, it's because you haven't tighten your sling enough.

We often get emails and phone calls from customers who are overwhelmed with the choice of baby slings and carriers on the market. Choosing a product you haven't used before is always daunting, especially when you are a new parent and want to ensure you make the best choice for your family.

Baby slings have been around since the beginning of time in some form or another; as our babies are born in a relatively helpless state humans have had to devise ways of transporting their young while carrying on with their day to day tasks. Nowadays, even though we are 'blessed' with all manner of gadgets and conveniences, parents realise very fast that keeping your baby attached to you is a very easy solution to coping with the addition of a new family member. Over the past five years the baby sling market has grown fast, with new manufacturers appearing almost daily.

Many sling companies are small; this limits the amount of products they can make and means that you can only buy them in specialist sling shops as they cannot supply major chains with the volume needed. However there are brands who are moving into high-street shops which spreads the word that there are some great, comfortable and attractive options available to the new parent looking for a sling. We are often asked why slings aren't more readily available, particularly as parents want to be able to see and try on slings before spending their money; we usually recommend Sling Meet. If you are in Bristol or North London you can also visit BORN who stock a nice range of slings.

If you do decided to purchase a sling online, there are several specialist sling shops selling almost every type of baby sling being produced. You can also buy slings off ebay but do pay particular attention to the quality of the product you purchased; if in doubt please ask the seller before buying. There are several reputable sellers on ebay who will happily answer your questions.

Pouch Sizing - Help!

We know that fitting yourself for a pouch is tricky - nearly 80% of emails and phone calls from customers are about this one sling issue! As it's important, both for safety and comfort, to get the exact fit we have updated our main pouch page to include tips and hints for getting yourself the perfect pouch.

Hotslings, our best selling pouch, have now stopped using their sizing calculator as it was not as helpful and precise as hoped. Instead, they have issued a sizing chart which should enable you to find the right size. Peanut Shell, our other pouch range, have put together a sizing guide as well, which can be viewed on their main page on our site. We are planning on adding at least one more pouch to our range, as these slings are incredibly (and deservedly popular) with parents.

So how do you get the right size pouch? Here's our top tricks and tips:

General tips for measuring and sizing fitted pouches:

Measure yourself from the top of your shoulder to your hip bone, holding the measuring tape firmly against you.
If you are pregnant, measure your back instead
If you are a man, ignore the bra size measurements and put in all other sizing information
Factors that will affect your pouch size are torso length and breast size

Not sure if you've bought the right size? A well fitting pouch will:

Feel close without being uncomfortably tight - if you can't breathe, it's too small
Not move from your body - if the pouch hangs from your body with your baby in it it is most likely too big
Feel like you are wearing another top with your baby in it
Support the weight of your baby and not pull on your shoulders or back - if it does, it's probably too big (or not spread out properly)

As we near our 3rd birthday we have all kinds of exciting new things lined up, including our new-look website. We will post more details here once we go live, but we're really looking forward to getting some feedback on the new site!

Get ready for winter with Big Mama Slings

Nasty weather is on the way - we're feeling cold and dreaming of hot beaches and winning the lottery. The reality is that the summer has ended and it is time to put away all our lovely light-weight babywearing gear and get out the warm stuff. Bring on fleece! Wool! Minkee!!
What is Minkee? Well, one of our favourite Mei Tai manufacturers, Babyhawk, makes gorgeous carriers lined with supersoft stuff called Minkee, and we have some of these carriers on the way. There are limited quantities and we suspect they will sell fast. If you can't wait for your winter sling, we can highly recommend the Winter Stuff section for instant gratification. We have instock the new Calin Bleu Designer Fleece Wraps and had to have the Charcoal and Orange one for carrying our 10 month-old.
